Starting with dialogue around the good, the bad, and the ugly of yoga adjustments, we will then move into some suggestions and explorations on how to create a safer container for offering assistance and guidance along the path of asana based yoga practices like ashtanga vinyasa and vinyasa flow. Our sequence of adjustments and philosophical underpinnings will be based on the ashtanga vinyasa “curriculum,’’, however what you learn will apply to many styles of teaching and learning.

Topics will include:

  • asana as a practice of yoga in the classical context and modern yoga lineages

  • when and why to assist students

  • choosing between assisting with words or with touch, or both

  • when and why not to assist (incl. trauma-sensitivity and awareness)

  • positive consent

  • teaching as a practice of cultivating a relationship with what is, vs asserting your agenda

  • eco-systems of touch

  • creating a safer container for touch

  • the yoga teachers scope of practice

  • keeping you and your students safer when giving adjustments

  • some ideas about “assists” vs. “adjustments”

  • assisting basic standing postures and seated postures

This workshop a great first step on the journey toward assisting a mysore room or offering safer adjustments in your own classes.

Adam Rumack has been practicing yoga and yogic meditation since his early teens, and has an 11 year daily ashtanga practice that includes the primary, secondary, and advanced series. He is director of Mysore Oakland, and has assisted some of the worlds most well known ashtanga teachers, including Tim Miller, David Garrigues and his primary yoga guide, Dena Kingsberg.  His approach is caring, gentle, grounded and relational, and informed by his critical view of the practice in terms of yogic philosophy.  HIs work with incarcerated men around the state of california has inspired a trauma-informed approach that resists coercion, dogma, or agenda driven teaching.

Adam will be joined in this workshop by his wife Mercedes who resists and transcends any effort at biography, but who has studied under Dena Kingsberg as a teacher, and who uses her background in yoga therapy to guide her gentle and supportive adjustments.
